Burgos biotech journ awards set
A TOTAL of 275 articles
are vying for best news story and best feature in this year's Jose
Burgos Awards for Biotechnology Journalism, with cash prizes and plaques
to be given out during the awards rites on November 24.
All competing reporters
and representatives of various newspapers will be invoited to attend the
rites scheduled at the Social Hall of the Department of Environment and
Natural Resources (DENR) in Visayas Avenues, Quezon City, from 5 p.m. to
8 p.m.
Contest organizers said
this year's competition is stiff, with the board of judges poring over
the entries from national dailies before coming up with a shortlist of
15 articles in each category by November 3.
The board is chaired by
Fr. Emmanuel C. Alparce of the St. Rose Parish of Lima in Bacacay, Albay,
with Agham partlylist Rep. Angelo Palmones, Jenny Panopio of the
Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in
Agriculture-Biotechnology Information Center (SEARCA-BIC), Alvin Capino
of radio station DWIZ and Dr. Reynaldo Ebora of the National Institute
of Biotechology of the University of the Philippines at Los Banos (BIOTECH-UPLB)
as members.
Aside from the
Biotechnology Coalition of the Philippines (BCP) and the J Burgos Media
Services, Inc., the other contest organizers are Biotechnology for Life
Media and Advocacy Resource Center (BMARC) and SEARCA-BIC.
Based on the results of
the board's deliberations on October 21, the following contest criteria
have been set:
– Relevance – 25
percent;
– Quality of story;
excellence (substance) – 25 percent;
– In-depth and
investigative – 25 percent, and;
– Style – 25 percent.
Three winners will be
named for each category.
Three newspapers that
published the most number of articles will be winners in the
institutional category.
