AS an initial step towards the drafting of the Mindanao Biotechnology Agenda, a roundtable discussion was held at the Mindanao State University–Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) on September 25 and 26. Sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Advanced Science and Technology Research & Development (DOST-PCASTRD), MSU-IIT and CHED Zonal Research Center for Regions 9, 10, Caraga and parts of Region 12, the activity drew participants from 11 universities and colleges from all over Mindanao, one university from the Visayas, as well as representatives from DOST Region 10 and ARMM. The plenary talks delivered on the first day were as follows: “IPR in Biotechnology Development and Commercialization” Dir. Epifanio M. Evasco, Bureau of Patents-Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines “The NIMBB and the National Biotechnology R&D Agenda” Dr. Ida F. Dalmacio, Director, National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (BIOTECH-UPLB) “Unified Biotechnology R&D Agenda: Rationale and Essentials” Dr. Reynaldo V. Ebora, Executive Director, PCASTRD “Tapping Marine Resources for Biotechnology R&D” Dr. Gisela P. Concepcion, Professor, UP-Marine Science Institute “Private-Public Collaboration in Biotechnology from the Laboratory to the Industry” Engr. Danilo P. Manayaga, Vice President for Visayas, BIONet “Initiative for Biotechnology Commercialization” Dr. Virginia G. Novenario-Enriquez, Research Information and Utilization Division, PCASTRD Workshops conducted on the second day were aimed to identify the strengths, weaknesses and needs in biotechnology research and development for Mindanao and to pinpoint biotechnology research and development priorities for agricultural and forest biotechnology, fisheries and aquatic biotechnology, and food, industrial and environmental biotechnology. The cluster on agricultural and forest biotechnology tackled genomics, proteomics, diagnostics, vaccines, marker-assisted selection breeding, molecular markers for useful plant/animal traits, GM crops/transgenics, biofertilizers, biopesti-cides, biopharming and bioinformatics. The workshop on this cluster was participated by Northern Mindanao State Institute of Science and Technology, Central Mindanao University, Misamis Oriental State College of Agriculture and Technology, University of the Philippines-Mindanao, University of Southern Mindanao and Western Mindanao State University. The scope for fisheries and aquatic biotechnology focused on the development of genetic markers, screening of novel and bioactive compounds for new drugs, pharmaceuticals and therapeutic agents from aquatic resources, bioremediation, diagnostics, vaccines, development of genetically-improved strains of cultivable species, establishment of germplasm center of economically important seaweeds. Representatives from Xavier University, Mindanao State University-Main and the Mindanao State University-Naawan conducted the workshop. The last workshop for the cluster on food, industrial and environmental biotechnology was tasked to participants coming from DOST-X, DOST-ARMM, MSU-IIT, University of San Carlos and University of Immaculate Conception. Priorities identified for this cluster were functional foods and nutrceuticals, nutrigenomics, detection kits for microbial contaminants, bioplastics, biofuels, bioremediation, waste management, and biosensors for environmental pollutants. Dr. Gaudencio C. Petalcorin, Jr. is the national president of BIONet and is also the vice president for academic affairs, research & extension of the Northern Mindanao State Institute of Science & Technology and the consortium director of the Caraga Consortium for Agriculture, Forestry & Resources Research & Development. |
