Mga alkalde sa Kabikulan, nakiisa laban
sa kahirapan gamit ang biotek

DALAWANG alkalde sa Kabikulan ang buong-pusong nakiisa sa laban ng bayan at ng Department of Agriculture Biotechnology Office (DA-BPO) sa kahirapan gamit ang biotechnology.

Ang mga punongbayan ay kabilang sa mga nagsidalo sa katatapos na "Seminar-Workshop on the Economic Opportunities on Biotechnology for Camarines Sur and Camarines Norte" na inorganisa ng DA-BPO sa pangunguna ni Director Alicia Ilaga at ng Biotechnology for Life Media and Advocacy Resource Center (BMARC).

Ayon kay Vinzons, Camarines Norte Mayor Oliver Ferrer, bagama’t bago ay malaki ang potensyal ng malunggay na tulungang maiahon sa kahirapan ang kanyang mga nasakupan.

Hindi na din umano bago sa kanila ang biotechnology. Sa katunayan umano ay taon na ang binibilang ng kanilang paggamit sa teknolohiya.

"We actually started using biotechnology in our town five years ago, this was when we got into the propagation of Bt corn," ani Ferrer.

Isa umanong larangang maaaring maging kapakipakinabang ang biotechnology ay sa pangisdaan.

"At this point, we really are interested in developing our fishery sector, our town is a coastal area. I’m sure, given enough fund from the government, Vinzons could be one of the best in the region in terms fish or aquatic production," dagdag ng alkalde.

Idinahilan ni Ferrer ang masaklap na katotohanang pirming dinadalaw ng bagyo ang kanilang lugar.

"Although rice, pineapple and corn can be propagated sa town namin, I think mas magandang i-develop ang fisheries sector for the reason na Bicol is a typhoon area," ani Ferrer.

Para naman kay Mayor Romeo Moreno ng Paracale, Camarines Sur na dumalo sa unang pagkakataon sa ganoong uri ng workshop, malaki ang potensyal ng biotechnology at na matulungan ang kanyang bayan.

"This is my first time to attend such a workshop and I have seen that biotechnology does have a lot of potential in being able to help my town. Biotechnology would boost the agricultural sector of Paracale," ani Moreno.

"I will encourage our people to apply the concepts of biotechnology in farming. It could be the solution to our campaign to expand our town’s agricultural production," anang alkalde.

Malaki din ang pasalamat ni Moreno sa DA-BPO at sa BIONet sa pagdaraos ng naturang workshop dahil mailalapit nito sa mga mamamayan ang biotechnology.

"We are thankful that the Department of Agriculture and BIONet organized this workshop, this brings biotechnology to more people," ani Moreno.

Umaasa din ang alkalde na magkaroong muli ng isa pang edukasyunal na pagtitipon upang lalong malaman ng mga mamamayan ang mga benepisyo ng biotechnology, na ayon sa kanya ay isang "malaking tulong."

" We can only hope that more information and education events are organized dito sa province namin so mas marami pang maturuan about biotechnology. Malaking tulong ito kasi our town would not be able to organize these events without aid from other partner agency or group," pagtatapos ni Moreno.
