Pinoy scientists and products shine
in 3rd National Biotechnology Week

Filipino scientists and their biotechnology products were on the spotlight during the celebration of the 3rd National Biotechnology Week.

Under the theme “Pinoy Biotek: Para sa Kalusugan, Kabuhayan at Kaunlaran,” the event showcased various natural ingredients products and other materials produced by the men and women behind biotech advances.

The Biotechnology Teachers’ Manual, a joint project of the Department of Agriculture Biotechnology Program Office and the University of the Philippines – National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (NIMBB) in UP Diliman and the DA Biotechnology Research Fellowship Program were launched on the first day of the celebration.

A forum titled “The Economics of Pinoy Biotek” was held in the afternoon.

The following day, “Pinoy Biotek” products were the main attraction during the tour of the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (BIOTECH)- University of the Philippines in Los Baños.

In the afternoon, a seminar dubbed “Communicating Biotechnology: Empowering Stakeholders in Developing Countries” was conducted. Pointers were given on how the participants, including scientists, development communication students, journalists and members of the UPLB community could send their messages across.

A Biotech Forestry workshop was held at the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) on the third day, with focus on the global status of genetically engineered trees, their prospects in boosting government reforestation efforts and biosafety policy options. The DA Biotechnology Business Incubation Facility was inaugurated and blessed in the afternoon.

Simultaneous celebrations were held on the fourth day of the biotech week at the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) in the Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija and in Quezon City.

Two conventions were held in PhilRice on this day, the 34th Annual Convention of the Philippine Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the 34th Annual Convention on AgriBiotech Initiatives and Innovations for Industry.
