DA holds 4th National Biotechnology Week

THE Department of Agriculture (DA) yesterday announced the celebration of the 4th National Biotechnology Week from  November 24 to 28 Institute for Small Scale Industries at the University of the Philippines in Diliman. DA, which chairs the committee preparing for this year's celebration, said many activities have been scheduled under the theme “Making Biotechnology Work for You.” A key event for the celebration involves the unveiling of 17 biotechnological products that the various scientists and researchers from UP Los Banos, UP Diliman, Central Luzon State University (CLSU), Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA), Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice), Philippine Carabao Center (PCC) and the Department of Science and Technology (DoST) have been working on. DoST said the scientists responsible for these advances will discuss their work, which have applications for food, biofuels, agriculture and the environment and an exhibit will be mounted to allow the public a peek into the economic benefits derived from biotechnology. Putting biofertilizers to good use

BY JOEL C. PAREDES and IAN GO

SUPERSUCCESSFUL agriculture scientists may differ in their views, but they have one trait in common: A conspicuous urge for perfection.Hardly do they realize that what is good for humanity could be a gold mine waiting to be resuscitated from their seemingly never-ending research work.Take the case of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), which has actually developed a handful of badly-needed biofertilzers, most of which have been developed in the 80s, but are hardly being tapped for commercial use.Biofertilizers can actually provide cheaper, effective and at best locally available to the agriculture sector, which has been importing about 85 percent of its fertilizer needs.
