DA holds 4th National Biotechnology Week
THE
Department of Agriculture (DA) yesterday announced the celebration of
the 4th National Biotechnology Week from November 24 to 28
Institute for Small Scale Industries at the University of the
Philippines in Diliman. DA, which chairs the committee preparing for
this year's celebration, said many activities have been scheduled under
the theme “Making Biotechnology Work for You.” A key event for the
celebration involves the unveiling of 17 biotechnological products that
the various scientists and researchers from UP Los Banos, UP Diliman,
Central Luzon State University (CLSU), Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA),
Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice), Philippine Carabao Center
(PCC) and the Department of Science and Technology (DoST) have been
working on. DoST said the scientists responsible for these advances will
discuss their work, which have applications for food, biofuels,
agriculture and the environment and an exhibit will be mounted to allow
the public a peek into the economic benefits derived from biotechnology.

Putting biofertilizers to good use
BY
JOEL C. PAREDES
and IAN GO
SUPERSUCCESSFUL
agriculture scientists may differ in their views, but they
have one trait in common: A conspicuous urge for
perfection.Hardly do
they realize that what is good for humanity could be a
gold mine waiting to be resuscitated from their seemingly
never-ending research work.Take the
case of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB),
which has actually developed a handful of badly-needed
biofertilzers, most of which have been developed in the
80s, but are hardly being tapped for commercial use.Biofertilizers can actually provide cheaper, effective and
at best locally available to the agriculture sector, which
has been importing about 85 percent of its fertilizer
needs.

BIONet
aktibo sa Biotech Week

PUSPUSAN ang paghahanda
ng Biotechnology Information and Organization Network (BIONet) nalalapit

katasan upang gawing “juice”.
protein” at mayaman sa Bitamina A, C, iron at potasyum.
